Global collaboration to address swine health challenges: key outcomes from the Swine Health Summit 2025

This year, the Swine Health Summit expanded its international scope through three editions held across America, Asia and Europe, bringing together around 300 attendees from animal health industry, veterinary professionals, researchers and technical experts. Organised by HIPRA, coordinator of the VAX4ASF project, the Summit provided a forum for discussion and knowledge exchange on current swine health challenges.

Across the different editions, discussions addressed a range of topics relevant to swine health at a global scale. Particular attention was given to transboundary animal diseases that continue to affect pig production in different regions, including African swine fever (ASF), which remains one of the most significant challenges for the sector worldwide.

A space for international dialogue and cooperation

The Swine Health Summit served as a platform for knowledge sharing, with discussions highlighting the role of research and technology in addressing swine health challenges. By convening participants from different continents, the Summit facilitated international dialogue on common challenges in swine health, enabling participants to gain broader understanding of how swine health challenges are addressed in different contexts.

Relevance for the VAX4ASF project

The Swine Health Summit takes place within a broader context of ongoing research and innovation efforts aimed at addressing African swine fever and other major challenges affecting the pig sector. In this framework, the VAX4ASF project focuses on advancing scientific knowledge on ASF and the African swine fever virus (ASFV) through coordinated research activities across Europe and beyond.

VAX4ASF brings together academic institutions, research organisations and industry partners to support vaccine development through research in virology, immunology and viral pathogenesis. The project places particular emphasis on understanding virus–host interactions and immunogenicity as a basis for the development of safe and effective vaccine strategies.

By promoting scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing among its partners, VAX4ASF aims to contribute to long-term ASF prevention and to support evidence-based approaches to animal health. These efforts are aligned with broader objectives related to food security, sustainable livestock production and global disease preparedness.
