VAX4ASF featured at the 17th International Scientific Symposium in Timișoara

Young researchers discuss global challenges in animal and public health, as ULST showcases VAX4ASF among other innovative initiatives

The University of Life Sciences “King Mihai I” from Timișoara (ULST), one of the academic partners of the VAX4ASF consortium, hosted the 17th International Scientific Symposium for Students and Young Researchers on 13–14 November 2025. Organised by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the event gathered around 300 students, doctoral candidates, and young scientists to explore innovative research addressing global challenges and solutions for animal and public health in a One Health context.

The symposium encouraged interdisciplinary dialogue across veterinary medicine, animal science, and public health, promoting collaboration between academia, industry, and public authorities. It provided a dynamic platform for emerging researchers to share their findings, strengthen scientific networks, and discuss sustainable approaches to animal and public health.

Within this broader scientific programme, the VAX4ASF project was featured among other insightful initiatives that showcased Europe’s progress in tackling major veterinary challenges. The presentation, “Next-generation solutions for ASF control: The VAX4ASF approach” was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Corina Pascu, Lecturer Dr. Luminița Costinar, and Lecturer Dr. Corina Badea, representing ULST’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Next-generation science for next-generation researchers

In their presentation, the ULST team introduced the vision and scientific foundations of the VAX4ASF project, which aims to develop new, safe, and effective vaccines to combat the African swine fever in domestic pigs and wild boars. They highlighted the particular importance of this viral disease, its major economic impact, the lack of safe and effective commercial vaccines, modern vaccine production technology, and DIVA diagnostic tests. 

We believe that such projects are an essential pillar of academic life, as they stimulate innovation and the training of young researchers, and from an epidemiological and economic perspective, they contribute directly to improving disease prevention and control, reducing losses in the livestock sector, and strengthening the resilience of our production systems.” – Lecturer Dr. Luminița Costinar 

A bridge between education and innovation

ULST’s participation in VAX4ASF reflects its long-standing commitment to integrating academic research, professional training, and international collaboration. As a member of the consortium, ULST contributes to the project’s research on virus epidemiology and the development of innovative strategies to control African swine fever in both wild and domestic pig populations. Through data collection, modelling, and field studies, ULST researchers are helping to improve surveillance systems and strengthen scientific understanding of ASF prevention.

Strengthening the One Health perspective

The symposium’s theme “Global Challenges and Solutions for Animal and Public Health in One Health Context” underlined the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health. Through this lens, the VAX4ASF approach demonstrates how innovations in animal vaccine research contribute to broader One Health objectives, supporting food security, rural livelihoods, and sustainable agriculture.

VAX4ASF also emphasises the critical role of education and scientific communication in tackling transboundary animal diseases. Engaging young veterinary professionals in global research initiatives not only strengthens future scientific capacity but also ensures that Europe remains at the forefront of animal health innovation.
